Southern Comfort at Meat Candy

Even though it doesn’t have a big sign, Meat Candy was really easy to find. It located right across Okay Vietnamese restaurant on the corner of William st and Brisbane st with plenty of parking spots surrounding it, plus 6 more behind the restaurant. The Southwestern Meat Candy white building was divided into 3 different areas: indoor eatery, breezy patio and the bar. The four of us were seated indoor and informed during our booking that we’d have a time limit of 2 hours.

Candy's Hot Lamb Ribs

I really love the Candy’s Hot Lamb Ribs which was served with blue cheese and glazed very well, it was very easy to eat since the meat was tender. If you’re looking for something other than the fried chicken, definitely go for the ribs… this is a mandatory meal to have when trying for the first time or returning to Meat Candy.

As for the fried chicken, there were 5 different sauces available for the chicken but it wasn’t on the cheap side. The price tag for one Chicken Maryland with side dish at Meat Candy is $20 but we were there for the chicken so we ordered two portions for sharing. The XXX spiked chicken wasn’t as hot as we expected but the sauce itself was delicious that we dipped our chips and pickles into it (and everything else that came to our table later on).

The Southern fried chicken has richer flavour compared to the XXX one so next time I’ll probably go for the Southern fried chicken and just pour out the XXX hot sauce that’s provided on every table. Meat Candy should sell their crispy Southern chicken skin as their side dish… (hahaha) :-D ps: I love how they serve the chicken inside the round tin along with bread to create your own fried chicken sandwich or… dip the bread into the XXX sauce…

Recommended Drink: The Smokey Scofflaw

I asked the waitress for her recommendation on the house cocktails and she told me that The Smokey Scofflaw received a lot of love from staff and customers so I ordered it. It was a very refreshing cocktail especially with the combination of citrus and smoked pomegranate in the drink.

Perfectly chargrilled local occy!

Since we weren’t full we added an extra order of chargrilled local occy which came with ancho chilli and peach salsa. I love how they use the ancho chili and stuck true to the Southern style of food in their offering. The octopus has a smoky aroma and slight crunchiness to it but on that night we felt that the peach salsa tasted quite weak.

One of the let downs of the night was the P.B.J. Ice Cream Sandwich, came with a thin slice of housemade peanut butter ice cream. A couple of our friends who visited Meat Candy also felt the same way. Fortunately there was another dessert in the menu and for extra $2 we can get the banana cream pie and homemade toasted coconut marshmallow. The latter dessert was smooth, creamy and delicious which made a great ending to the night.

Despite the price tag of the Chicken Maryland, the well coated and crispy fried chicken is a must try when you visit Meat Candy! Oh, along with that delicious hot lamb ribs too ;-)
